QTS vs PGCE — Which Do Nigerian Teachers Need to Teach in UK

Updated in February — PRO JOBBER

If you’re a Nigerian teacher looking to teach in the UK, you’ve probably come across two important qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

But which one do you actually need? This guide explains the differences between QTS and PGCE, which one is required for Nigerian teachers, and how to apply.

What is QTS?

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is the official certification that allows teachers to work in state-funded (public) schools in England and Wales.

Who Needs QTS?

  • Teachers who want to work in UK government-funded primary or secondary schools.
  • Those who want higher salaries and better job opportunities.
  • Teachers applying for a Skilled Worker Visa with visa sponsorship.

How Nigerian teachers can get QTS

Apply directly for QTS if you have a Bachelor’s degree and TRCN certificate.

If ineligible, take an Assessment-Only QTS route to prove your teaching skills.

If you don’t qualify for direct QTS, you may need to complete a PGCE or a teacher training program.

What is PGCE?

A PGCE is a teacher training qualification, not a certification to teach.

It is a one-year postgraduate program that includes teaching practice and coursework.

Who needs a PGCE?

  • Teachers who want an academic qualification in teaching
  • Those who don’t qualify for direct QTS.
  • Teachers who want to work in private schools or international schools.

Types of PGCE

  • PGCE with QTS – Includes training that leads to QTS certification.
  • PGCE without QTS – Does NOT qualify you to teach in UK state schools.

How to apply for a PGCE?

Choose a PGCE program at a UK university.

Apply through UCAS Teacher Training or directly via the university.

If accepted, apply for a UK Student Visa to study.

Which one should you get?

If You Already Have Teaching Experience in Nigeria, apply for QTS directly if you meet the eligibility requirements.

If you’re not eligible, consider an Assessment-Only QTS route.

If You Don’t Have a Teaching Qualification: You may need to study a PGCE in the UK, which could lead to QTS.

If You Want to Work in a UK Private School: A PGCE may be sufficient (QTS is not mandatory for private schools).
