1. Undergraduate route
This route is for those who have decided to become teachers immediately after secondary school (or after completing a diploma).
It involves studying for an undergraduate degree that includes teacher training and leads to QTS upon graduation.
The two main degrees available are:
- Bachelor of Education (BEd): which focuses entirely on education and teaching.
- Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) with QTS: which is a subject-based degree (such as English, Mathematics, or Science) that includes teacher training.
These programs last 3–4 years and include classroom experience in UK schools.
Pros or Benefits
- No extra training after graduation – You receive QTS directly.
- Strong foundation in teaching methods – Combines academic study with school placements.
- Scholarships and financial aid may be available.
Cons or Demerits
- Takes too long – At least three years of study.
- Not suitable for experienced teachers – More like time-wastage.
- High tuition fees for international students – around £15,000–£25,000 per year.
2. Postgraduate route (PGCE with QTS)
If you already have a degree, you can apply for the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with QTS.
This is the most common route for graduate teachers.
It is a one-year (full-time) or two-year (part-time) course which combines university-based training with teaching placements in UK schools.
PGCE courses are available in different subjects like Mathematics, Science, and English.
Pros or Benefits
- Faster than an undergraduate degree – Only one year.
- Recognized worldwide – You can use a PGCE to teach in other countries.
- Bursaries and scholarships – Some subjects offer financial support.
Cons or Demerits
- Expensive – Tuition fees range from £15,000–£25,000 per year.
- Requires visa sponsorship – International students must apply for a study visa.
- Competitive admissions – You need a strong academic record and teaching potential.
3. Assessment-Only (AO) Route
This is the fastest way to get QTS if you are an experienced teacher. Instead of taking a training course, you are assessed while teaching.
You must have at least two years of teaching experience in a school and you will be observed and assessed over 12 weeks.
No additional coursework or university study is required.
Pros or Benefits
- Fast-track option – Can be completed in 12 weeks.
- No extra study required – Ideal for experienced teachers.
- Lower cost than PGCE – Only the assessment fee is required.
Cons or Demerits
- Must be employed in a UK school – You need a school to support your application.
- Not available from Nigeria – You must already be teaching in the UK or in an accredited international school.
- Requires teaching experience – At least two years.
4. International & Apprenticeship Routes
International Qualified Teacher Status (iQTS) is a new option for teachers outside the UK.
You can train remotely from Nigeria while working in a school.
And after completing iQTS, you can apply for full QTS and move to the UK to teach.
Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship is a work-based training program where you teach and learn at the same time.
You earn a salary while training, making it more affordable.
However, you must already be in the UK to qualify.
Pros or Benefits
- iQTS allows remote training from Nigeria – No need to relocate immediately.
- Apprenticeship is cost-effective – No tuition fees; salary provided.
- Recognized in the UK – Leads to full QTS.
Cons or Demerits
- iQTS is still new – Limited availability and competition for places.
- Apprenticeship requires UK work sponsorship – Not suitable for those outside the UK.
Which one is best for you as a Nigerian teacher?
It depends.
If you are a graduate and can afford the tuition fees, the PGCE with QTS is your best option.
If you are already teaching in the UK without QTS, the Assessment-Only Route is your best way to get QTS.
If you want to train while staying in Nigeria, consider the iQTS route (if available in your subject).
