Getting Your Academic Transcript from a Nigerian University (Within 3 Weeks)

Updated in February — PRO JOBBER

If you are a graduate of a Nigerian university and need your academic transcript for study, work, or immigration purposes, you must follow a structured process to obtain it.

Many institutions in the UK, US, Canada, and other countries require transcripts as proof of your academic qualifications.

Since the process varies slightly across different universities, this guide provides a detailed step-by-step approach that applies to most Nigerian universities.

See how to get your University transcript

#1. Understand the types of transcript

Before applying for your transcript, it is important to determine which type you need.

  • Official Transcript

Sent directly from your university to an institution (e.g., a foreign university or employer).

It is sealed, signed, and stamped to maintain authenticity and cannot be given directly to the student.

  • Student Copy (Unofficial Transcript)

A personal copy for your records. Not accepted for official purposes but can be useful for verifying details before requesting for the official transcript to be sent.

E-Transcript (Electronic Transcript)Some universities offer digital transcripts via ETX-NG or similar platforms.

It is sent securely via email to universities or organizations abroad.

So.

Verify where the transcript is to be sent and if they will accept electronic copies or only sealed hard copies?

#2. Prepare your required documents

Before visiting your university, ensure you have the following ready.

  • A formal application letter requesting your transcript.
  • A copy of your degree certificate or statement of results.
  • A copy of your NYSC certificate (if required).
  • Valid identification (e.g., international passport, national ID, driver’s license).
  • Matriculation number and student ID (if available).
  • Recipient’s details (full name, address, and email of the institution requesting the transcript).
  • Proof of transcript payment (receipt or transaction slip).

#3. Make payment for transcript processing

Most Nigerian universities require payment before processing your transcript.

The cost varies by institution, but it typically ranges from ₦10,000 – ₦50,000 (or more for international delivery).

Payment is either on the University’s official portal (via Remita, Interswitch, or dedicated school portals) or through bank deposit to the university account.

Always keep your payment receipt as proof, as you will need it to complete your application.

#4. Submit your application

Some universities have a Transcript Office specifically handling such requests.

But most times, The Registry or Academic Affairs Unit of your university do the handling.

If applying online, use the university’s transcript request portal.

How to Submit?

In Person: Visit the transcript office with your documents and payment receipt.

Via Email: Some universities allow email submissions with scanned documents.

Online Portal: If your university has an online system, follow the instructions to upload documents and make requests.

#5. Follow-up on your application

Most Nigerian universities are known for delays, so it is crucial to follow up to ensure timely processing.

Here’s how.

  • Visit the transcript office regularly (if applying in person).
  • Call or email the registry department for updates.
  • Use contacts within the university (e.g., former lecturers, administrative staff).
  • Check the status on the university’s online portal (if available).
  • If using ETX-NG, log in to track the processing.
  • Processing time varies from a few days to several months, depending on the university.

#6. Confirm delivery of your transcript

Once your transcript has been processed, ensure that:

  • It is sent to the correct recipient (university, employer, or professional body).
  • You receive confirmation of delivery (some universities provide tracking numbers).
  • If needed, request for a duplicate copy (in case the original is lost or delayed).

Some challenges you may face

1. If Your University Has Lost Your Records

Some schools suffer from poor record-keeping.In such cases, you may need to re-submit your documents (degree certificate, statement of results, etc.).

2. If You Studied a Long Time Ago

Older records take longer to retrieve.Consider visiting your faculty or department to help locate your files.

3. If You Are Outside Nigeria

Ask a trusted person in Nigeria to handle the process on your behalf.

Check if your university offers e-transcripts for remote requests.

    4. If Your University Has Poor Customer Service

    Be patient but persistent.

Use multiple communication channels (phone, email, and physical visits).

Seek help from student alumni associations or academic staff.

    GOOD LUCK!
